Busy Busy Busy and Lazy

Its been 2 long months since i visited and updated by own blog. I was busy and lazy. Sorry ..
So what have I been up to lately?

Well october was full with meetings and policy updates at work .. had to rush to ensure that the Majlis endorses our regulations. Then, I was on leave for two weeks with husband and  children .. we went on vacation at Port Dickson and Frasers Hill. In november .. again busy with my children's school matters. Naureen will be attending primary school while Ayman will be attending playschool. I was hunting for playschool/preschool/ and going to the Jabatan Pelajaran jalan duta to handle naureen's school matters.

It was hectic... now its already the 2nd week of December.

I have enrolled Ayman to an Islamic based Preschool - Genius Aulad. Prior to enroll him there i did alot of visiting a few islamic preschool around Klang Valley. There's the CIC Taman Permata, Alimkids Playgroup and Al-Hidayah Preschool... Little Caliphs was too far from the rest of these preschool. At the end of November, I made up my mind to enrol Ayman at Genius Aulad Wangsa Maju. The medium of instruction is English and like most of the Islamic preschool in the klang valley, it stresses on the following mission:

"The provision of an Islamic foundation through English language-based Islamic religious and conventional pre school education. "

So not only will he be educated with the conventional syllabus but it will also be integrated with Islamic education such as arabic letters, solat, doa, hafazan .. fardhu ain etc. InsyaAllah, I believe I have made the best choice of education for Ayman.

Then, comes Naureen's school matters... previously I registered her to SK Taman Setiawangsa, but result came out that she is to be enrolled at ST Mary Kuala Lumpur. I am more than okay with it as I was a ST Mary alumnus and I know the school is good! My family told me to appeal the result as it was too far and it would be difficult for them to manage her if I am not around.. so I relented and appeal to Jabatan Pelajaran. In October, I received a shocking letter. The Jabatan Pelajaran accepted my appeal but instead of sending Naureen to SK Taman Setiawangsa, they sent her name to SK Taman Kepong!!!! A school that I have never registered and its not even near to our home. I scrambled to appeal for the second time.. went to Jalan Duta again .. submit my appeal but I still have to go to SK Kepong to register her.. if not she will not have a school to go to next year.

Oh well ... she has a school .. and I am fine with it. The only problem would be to get her ready by 6.45 am so that she'll arrive at SK Taman Kepong by 7.00 am - 7.15 am. Then pick her up after school at 1.30 pm. I am fine with it .. long term plan would be to relocate to Kepong. I do not want to change school if she is already able to adapt positively in the school.

I have prepared most of the school stuff .. except buying books... tomorrow will go and get the list from the school.

InsyaAllah .. all will be well.

Taser- A funny story

Taken from : http://nursinglink.monster.com/topics/4637-funny-taser-story/posts

A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this:

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol and Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety….??WAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button.Nothing! I was disappointed.I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right?
There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh and blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it.She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5 inches long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!'

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best…? I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dip shit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad.I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it.I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . .HOLY MOTHER OF GOD WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . .WHAT THE HELL!!!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again.I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and ting ling in my legs?

The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.A three second burst would be considered conservative? THAT HURT LIKE HELL!!!

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so; from where it originally was.My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs.I had no control over the drooling.

Apparently I shit myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone.I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!!

P. S.My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!

I Serve - 100 years of existence

taken from wikipedia : SMK St Mary Kuala Lumpur.

"St. Mary's School, locally known as SMK St. Mary in Malay, is a public all-girls secondary school located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each student in St. Mary's is also known as St. Marian."

I am a St. Marian (1982 - 1989) Eventhough, I completed my high school at another all girl school - the famous Sultan Ibrahim Girls School in Johor Bahru, my heart will always be with St Mary KL. Previously, the primary and high school were located at Jalan Tengah in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. Next to Menara Promet (the sold MAS building). The old school was demolished and replaced with a posh High Rise Serviced Condominium called St Mary Residences (a whopping RM 1.3 million per unit!).

St Mary is always well known for its talent shows, musicals and drama. It was here that I was exposed to Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte. I remember we have sessions on English Literature and Sastera Melayu. I adore each time and I would read..reread .and read again the books. After I moved to SIGS, JB.. there was no literature sessions .. its just you! So in SIGS, I would end up in the library after school, rummaging for literature books. I would sit there and read to my hearts contend until the student librarian told me to leave! :-). It was also the first time, I was exposed to English drama and Story telling during Islamic week. I was 12 when I had to be a stand-in for Allayarhamah Aspalaila in a school play - KL zone. Our school was very active in KL. Drama contest and cheerleeding! Where the netball team goes .. I was there to cheer ;-) ! . I was also a Mcneilian.. In St Mary, students are grouped into 4 houses for sports day. Well.. I was a Mcneil ( Blue House) in Form1 and 2 but I was a Pring (Yellow House) in primary school. Mcneil, Pring, Pope (Green House) and Playne (Red House) are the names of the previous headmistresses of St Mary KL from 1917 - 1934.

There were so many fond memories. Now, 22 years later.. I'd like my daughter to gain the experiences that I acquired while in St Mary. I always harbour the feelings to have my daughter schooled there. Yesterday, my prayers were answered! She was admitted to St Mary primary school which is located in Selayang (the new location). I know that its quite far from Keramat and we have to go out atleast around 6.30 am in order to reach St Mary before 7.30 am. Insyaallah, I know we'll go through it. It will be a difficult first 2 years for us to commute from Keramat to Selayang. Insyaallah, we'll move there when the time is right. My parents are not keen on it as its quite far so they asked me to appeal to the Jabatan Pendidikan, Jln Duta so that she'll be readmitted to SK Taman Setiawangsa. As an obedient daughter and wife.. I did as told but again .. deep in my heart.. I hope that the appeal is rejected! :-) My hubby would be furious reading this entry... but I'm so sorry.. I know she'll do good in St Mary as I've did! I would love to teach her the school song.

Oh by the way, my mom was also a teacher in St Mary KL in the 70s until 1982. She taught Geography, Bahasa Malaysia and Sejarah! I remember when I was a toddler.. mom would bring me to school when there's events or go to school trips. During Eid celebration her students would come to our house and have barbecues! Ohh .. can't wait for naureen to start school!

Here's the school website - http://stmary_kl.webs.com/.

St Mary will be 100 years old in 2012!

United and strong,
Sing we a glad song,
For the school and the rules,
That guide us,
Of the colors and crest,
Of our works and our rest,
Of the things that our school provide us.

For God and for school,
Afar be it known,
We stand by the badge of our school,
The yellow and blue,
Shall ever be seen,
To the fore,
In sports and pure knowledge.

Will aye seek her fame,
Yea make good her claim,
For the name and the fame,
The dearest,
So work for the whole,
And sing from the soul,
For the sake of St. Mary,
The dearest.

Hari ni .. OOoo hari ini.

I despise Malaysian politics. Everytime when its nearing the election all stuff starts to crop up.  It does no good to the citizens. Today there's the Bersih demonstration in  KL  from the opposition and then there will also be anti-Bersih demonstrators and of course spectators!

Normally, today we would be at the KLCC playground with the children. But today, we opt to have breakfast at home and stay home! It would be much safer. Just don't understand why these people want to demonstrate in the city centre. The police already told them that they can demonstrate outside of KL. Police are everywhere.. major roads in KL are blocked. Even yesterday there was a long traffic jam at the Karak Toll Plaza .. traffic was so freakin slow at DUKE and at other major highways. Whats their motives anyways?  We don't feel safe! Hmm.. even my mom was quite upset everytime these people (regardless whether they are Pro Government or Opposition) start to demonstrate! Well she went through 13th May 1969 !!! Who wouldn't!!! She even asked whether I have enough food or milk if.. if something goes wrong today. Hish!

Hmm just hope all is well today.. all I heard from home is sirens.. sirens.. sirens. I read in the Online paper..hundreds were detained. Tried to follow the updates via thestar.com.my - even that also was diverted to a less graphic site due to heavy traffic! Whatever it is .. I hope some good will come out of this event.. hopefully those detained will be released eventually.. to my government and the opposition ... Malaysian first.. okay?

ISTAC - Kuala Lumpur Campus

There's one place I prefer going to for training or just go to visit .. its ISTAC. One of its kind .. when you step inside .. you'll feel like your're put into a time machine back to the Islamic Civilization in Spain. I guess thats what Syed Naquib Al Attas tried to potray when designing or maybe conceptualizing the development of the ISTAC buildings. It just takes your breath away... when I go there early in the morning before attending trainings .. I would just walk along the corridors lit by the morning sun or just gazed out the balcony which overlooked Jalan Duta and Kuala Lumpur. Its just beautiful!

Here's some information taken from the official website of ISTAC -

"The International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) was founded on 27th February, 1987. It was officially launched by then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed on 4th October, 1991 as a research and postgraduate institution offering degrees in Islamic civilization and Islamic science.

The campus consists of a main administration and academic building, a library, a mosque and a conference hall. From 1991 to 2002, ISTAC was an autonomous body affiliated to the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). However, in 2002, it was made a Kulliyyah of IIUM.
On 6th May 2010, ISTAC and IIiBF was officially launch by HRH Sultan of Pahang and to be known as the IIUM Kuala Lumpur Campus"

All the personal images in my blog are taken using my trusted mobile phone - Nokia E72. Thanks dearest hubby for the present!

A hotel review - Le Waterina Boutique Hotel

The father of two ..

The beach

Quiet surrounding and beautiful beach

Front Entrance of the Hotel

The Front Facade

They do not have bath tub ... only shower
This was the same room we stayed .. very spacious and affordable.. The kids were running all over the place :-)

The Sky Deck - We had breakfast here .. it was very windy and eventhough it was nearing 11.00 am and the sun was shining bright .. it was not hot at all.

Swimming Pool, next to Sky Deck

My family and I went to Chennai in February to visit relatives.. We visited wajju bhaiyya's family and also Arshad's youngest uncle and his grandmother. The children had a great time playing on the roof top with the cousins whom they met for the first time. Samreen has grown tall and very intelligent since the last time I met her. Now she's 10 going on 11 .. such a brilliant young lady! Naureen looks up to her. Anyways, the visit to Chennai was brief and we spent the night at a 3 Star Hotel - Le Waterina Seaside Hotel which is located in Thiruvanmiyur, Kottivakam Beach, Chennai.Having breakfast with Daddy

It was just an overnight stop over but I wished that we could stay longer. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful! So here's some of review on the web regarding The Boutique Hotel. It is 4 km from the Crocodile Bank and 12 km from Chennai Central Railway Station. Anna International Airport is 15 km away. Waterina’s rooms come equipped with minibars and tea/coffee makers. Soundproofed rooms have trouser presses and offer flat-screen TVs. Rooms offer views of Bay of Bengal or the garden.

Guests can work out in the fitness centre or head for a relaxing massage. A concierge desk takes care of guests’ requests and needs. Sightseeing arrangements can be made at the tour desk.

Authentic Indian cuisine is served at Zaica, while offering panoramic sea views. Alternatively, drinks can be enjoyed in the bar and lounge. Room service is also available.
The Bay of Bengal

The food - Well being asians .. we do not have issues or problems eating authentic Indian food .. we have loads of 'em in Malaysia so in India .. its just the same. The price is quite cheap for a 3 Star Hotel and we're not that picky about food .. so to us it was DELICIOUS!
This menu is for ordering in .. if you want English breakfast .. just go to the Sky Deck. You'll get sausages, toasts, cereals, a variety of eggs, fresh fruits, juices, yougurt, chapati and dals.

For lunch, it costs us less than RM 40 for all four of us...
The menu ... hmm what should we eat .. then 30 minutes later ...

Delicious fried chicken and fries, chapatis and curries and white rice with lentil dals and vegetables.

Midnight - we were all tired but when entered the room, we were overwhelmed by the room.. we had a very good night sleep!

In summary, the staff was courteous, helpful and efficient. The hotel and the surrounding area was quite clean. The food was good .. again this may differ from person to person due to their taste buds ;-). Excellent ambiance .. especially the suite that we got. We were tired after a long journey so the first impression after arriving at the room at aroun 12 midnight was .. a gaping mouth .. it exceeds our expectation as we were comparing a 3 star hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Room service was good and on time delivering the food. Housekeeping was also good. We requested taxi last minute to go to the Chennai International Airport and we only need to wait in the room until they call us. Overall stay was good .. we will definitely come again! Yes I will recommend this hotel to my family and friends.

Deadlines .. deadlines

Its just days to go before I start my vacation. Well atleast I and my team members have finalised and submit the following so that HODs can start do their APAR:

1) APE
2) ASE
3) 2010 KPI Average
4) Overall incident/service requests tickets
5) ICT Awareness calendar - taken up by the not so new ISO.
6) PMO/Monthly report and servicedesk report - taken up by the not so new ISO.

Based on observation - he is doing good and the task I've assigned to him is in good hands. No need to worry! Training Calendar for new staff briefing is also completed.

We have also managed to finalised the BSC for 2010 with assistance from our ISO and part timer/practical trainee. They've done a good job these past 2 months.

The website is completed.. again thanks to Umi and Azizan who had finished the website on 31st December.

I think the last tasks before I leave for vacation is to ensure the UTICTEC minutes are distributed to all members, review policy documnent with legal and do a presentation slide for the big boss on Quality Service Delivery to New staff.

The three week vacation would be full with activities visiting family and also do some back log work on policies. Yes .. i am bringing work to India...what can I say .. I am a lousy person to boot la. I am targeting to have policies ammended within the weeks I'm in India... then when I come back - will start policy review meetings. Its high time i get back into gear to have the policies endorsed to the higher level- "The Majlis".

Good luck to me .. i really need it! Its 1.21 am .. I've to finish up the analysis la pula.

Top place to go to in Kochi?

Kairali

The Kerala government emporium which sells the local handicrafts at fixed rates. It is open from 09:00 to 20:00. The artifacts, clothes and crafts are all typical to the state. A Kathakali mask makes a nice souvenir and comes in small, medium and large sizes.
The furniture is nice as well. If you want to pick out a typical local costume try the white sari with a golden border. A traditional bridal sari will have real gold thread hand woven into it.

Location : MG Road, Ernakulam

Spices

With a pepper exchange at Jew Town, spices are a great souvenir from Kochi. Most of them are well packed and compact making them easy to carry. They also make excellent gifts for people back home. Cinnamon, pepper, green cardamom, brown cardamom, cloves, bay leaf are all on offer.
The herbs include holy basil, fenugreek, and coriander. Try and pick well-sealed packets rather than open spices as the vacuum packed spices will keep fresh longer.
Location: most emporiums and shops have a section of spices. Also at most of the tourist spots there are spice stalls. There are a line of stores at Bazaar Road at Fort Cochin and Mattancherry Island.

Antiques and Reproductions

There is a line of shops dealing in antiques and reproductions here. The artifacts include miniatures of snake boats, spice boxes, wooden temples, wall hangings - all carved out of wood. There are also replications which will be much cheaper. Tiny bronze images and boxes are also available.
Make sure that you don’t pick up anything which they claim is more than 100 years old, as legally these antiques are not allowed to leave the country. If they insist it is over a century old and are still trying to sell it to you beware as it is most likely a reproduction. Just spend some time browsing if you don’t know what you wish to pick up first.
Location: A side street in the vicinity of the Synagogue at Fort Cochin and Mattancherry island

Supervisor Vs Subordinate

Taken from www.wisegeek.com:

The role of a subordinate is to perform duties or accept delegated responsibilities assigned by a superior. An office manager, for example, may assign routine paperwork to a subordinate in order to concentrate on an important project of his or her own. Because the relationship is superior/subordinate, the employee has an obligation to perform the assigned task. This is not the same relationship as a co-worker asking for assistance or a personal favor. There is a certain level of respect for a superior's position that motivates a subordinate to accept the task or responsibility.

An employee on the bottom rung of a corporate ladder may be considered a subordinate to virtually everyone else, but eventually he or she may be promoted to a position with some managerial responsibilities. A subordinate often observes a superior's average workday in order to learn what skills would be necessary to advance. Bosses and their subordinates may have very strong working relationships, or they may not mesh well as a team. Personality clashes between a superior and a subordinate may also make their working relationship difficult. An employee in a subordinate role may feel undervalued, while a superior may feel a subordinate does not respect his or her authority.

The relationship between a subordinate and a superior may also be regulated by company policies. Because a certain level of respect and distance should be maintained, managers are often discouraged from fraternizing with subordinate employees outside the office. Too much familiarity with a subordinate could lead to charges of favoritism or leniency in the workplace. By restricting social contact between superiors and subordinates, many company leaders hope to keep relationships on a professional level.

There is also a great deal of emphasis placed on romantic relationships between subordinates and superiors. Even if the relationship itself is consensual, there is a risk that the superior may expose the company to a sexual harassment lawsuit if the relationship with a subordinate ends badly. Employees in a direct superior/subordinate professional relationship are often discouraged from forming personal relationships in order to avoid potential complications in the future.

My opinion:

1) As a muslim, relations amat penting. Meaning to be devoid of personal relationship would create robots or emphathic human being at the work place. I do not think that there is a need to sever social interactions or personal relations or not having good friends at the work place. Eventhough, one is a superior and the other is a subordinate, one can be good friends. But it is difficult, to ensure that the friendship that develops are not being abused my either party to gain LENIENCY or to be taken advantage upon on the trust or friendship that has developed through the years.

2) I tend to agree that an understanding between supervisor-subordinate on the work relation must be professional irregardless of how close you are. Again, there must be understanding between the two, if not you'll get problematic subordinate who in the end will sever his/her ties with you just because of issues at work!

3) A supervisor should also treats his/her staff with respect where respect is due. One should not blindly cover up problems/condone irresponsible behaviour just because you are close. Again... note that in a working relationship; it is regulated by Company policy. Hence, if your subordinate does something wrong i.e not showing up for work .. no communication .. non performance .. You as the supervisor need to communicate to the subordinate about this matter and also to ensure that company policies are adhered to. Of course kita ni manusia ... IHSAN .. kita tak kejam.. normally report for further action setelah berkali-kali remind to improve on job related matters or attendance matters.

4) As a boss, you need to get acquaintance with your subordinates; to understand their names, their routines, their strengths, their weaknesses, and equally important, is their attitudes. How will they build working relationship with you? How do you understand the dimensions behind the relationship? - taken from www.articlebase.com.
- Know their strength
- Know their weaknesses and attitudes
- routines and responsibilities

in the article it is stated that there are 3 types of relations between Sv & Subordinate.
1) Relationship by Job title - OKAY

The first step is relationship by title. In the very beginning, the relationship is merely relied on your superior job title over your subordinates; for instance, manager with staff, and supervisor with worker. Your relationship or source of power is come with the subordinates' perception of an authority attained from your superior status. Without this, you are nothing more than a peer working with them. You cannot order and instruct them

2) Relationship by Job Knowledge - OKAY

The second step or stage is the solid job-related knowledge carried with you. Your working experience and your education background will boost your professionalism and your authority in your department. In fact, your salary and package provided by the company is majority depended on this to negotiate during your job interview with current company. Your subordinates will come to you with questions, and sometimes with challenges, and look for your answers and advises. It is a right moment you can further enhance the relationship by providing them with expertise answers and effective instructions to resolve their problems.

3) Relationship by Respect - STILL NEED TO DEVELOP THIS SKILL.

The last step is the relationship by respect. This is one of the major ingredients to maintain the positive relationship with your team. If you can coach your subordinates with your professional knowledge and with enthusiastic attitude, you will win the respect from your team under your leadership. Equally important, you should respect them as they respect you. This step will help building a positive and long-lasting working relationship with your subordinates.

It is difficult to fulfill everybody's expectation or to be the most liked supervisor! In the end, it all comes down to roles and responsibilities. What are the supervisor's responsibilities and what are the subordinate's responsibilities. At the end of the day, you yourselves need to ask; what have you done today? Have you done your job to the expectation of your superior? Good? Mediocre?Excellent? Bad? Have you communicate issues that may have affected your deliverables? Do you take for granted or use the friendship that you had with your supervisor to gain/ or you expect leniency on issues that you may have brought up? Supervisor - are you to authoritative? Rigid? Do not reason well with subordinate? lack of empathy? Do you facilitate? Impart knowledge?- Now which one am I? I am a supervisor and also a subordinate to two bosses. So these questions also applies to me too. Have I done to the best of my ability to supersvise and guide my subordinate? As a subordinate; have I fullfilled the needs and tasks assigned by my senior bosses? Arghhhh .. lets see my APAR for 2010; whether they feel I did the job well or not.
